The Respondus Lockdown Browser is a special web browser that 'locks' a user's computer while they are taking an online quiz or exam. It is an anti-cheating application used to protect the integrity of online exams.

If there are problems uninstalling through the Windows Control Panel, you can download and run the LockDown Browser installer a second time and select the option 'Uninstall/Remove' when prompted. In some situations, we recommend re-installing LockDown Browser and then immediately run the installer again to remove LockDown Browser. What does the Respondus browser do?

  1. Assessments are displayed full-screen and cannot be minimized
  2. Users cannot access other applications including email, messaging tools, screen-sharing, virtual machines etc.
  3. Print, Print Screen and screen capture functions are disabled
  4. Copying and pasting anything to or from an assessment is prevented
  5. Right-click menu options, function keys, keyboard shortcuts and task switching are disabled
  6. An assessment cannot be exited until the student submits it for grading
  7. Browser menu and toolbar options are removed, except for Back, Forward, Refresh and Stop
  8. Assessments that are set up for use with LockDown Browser cannot be accessed with other browsers

How do I know if a quiz requires the Respondus browser?

  1. Typically your instructor(s) will let you know if the Respondus browser is required for any of their quizzes

Can I take a Respondus quiz on my iPad? What about other types of tablets?

  1. Instructors have the option of enabling iPad use for Lockdown quizzes. It is a setting that they have to specifically set. It is not enabled by default.
  2. Currently the only supported tablet for higher education clients is the iPad.
    1. Download and install the Lockdown Browswer from the iTunes app store
    2. The first time you use the app it will ask you to select your institution.

Before taking an online exam that requires Respondus LockDown Browser, you must install the LockDown Browser application.

  1. Go to the Respondus LockDown Browser download page.
  2. Click the Install Now button.
  3. Locate the file and execute it.
    Note: This varies by browser. The example above is in Chrome.
  4. If you are prompted to run a Java application, Click the Yes button.
  5. If you are prompted with a Symantec warning click the Allow this File button and then click the OK button.
  6. Select your language and then click the Next button.
  7. SelectI accept the terms… and click the Next button.
  8. Click the Finish button.
